“In spite of the largest UK trusts and foundations increasing their giving to environmental charities they still give overall less than 3% of their grants to environmental issues[1]” says Denise Lillya, author of the Directory of Social Change’s (DSC) new edition of the Environment Funding Guide.
It’s over ten years since the publication of the last edition of the guide and both the state of the planet and environmental fundraising have changed considerably since then. With giving to environmental causes so low on the agenda of many grantmakers, the 4th edition of this respected guide is more important that ever before.
Denise continues, “The aim has been not only to give fundraisers directions to sources of funding but to advise them on all aspects of making applications to the various funding sources.”
The guide includes new chapters on getting started, developing a strategy, recruiting a fundraiser, preparing a budget, project fundraising, writing a good application, campaigning issues, environmental organisations and charitable status and tax requirements and benefits.
“It was heartening in the course of the research to learn of so many people striving to protect our environment and all within it for ourselves and future generations, very often in a voluntary capacity.” says Denise. “I would make a plea to UK grantmaking charities to expand their grantmaking to environmental causes with the same urgency as environmental organisations devote to their work and in recognition of all that they achieve.”
