Writing for Impact

Are your audiences excited by your written words or is what you write a chore to read?

One day course

Our writing has a lasting impact on our supporters and clients. Discover a range of creative approaches that will help you capture and hold your reader’s attention, as well as bringing out the best in you and your organisation.

Who should sign up?

For anyone who has to write marketing or promotional email, brochures, leaflets, articles, newsletters or text for web pages.

What will I get out of it?

This course will help you write well, whether you need to influence, inspire or inform. You’ll find out how to use narratives, examples and human interest to bring your text to life.  You’ll also compile a toolkit of techniques that you can apply to personal writing tasks in your own organisation.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • identify the right questions to ask before you start writing
  • plan your content
  • adapt your voice and tone to different audiences
  • tailor your writing to the situation and context
  • bring information to life
  • edit your text effectively

What will it cover?

  • Techniques to help you get started
  • Planning and structuring
  • Choosing the right tone and voice
  • Using stories and case studies
  • Editing, proofreading, and working with feedback

On the day, please bring with you a rough idea for of a piece of written work that you need to complete as part of your job.

You will learn by doing. The day includes practical exercises and feedback, as well as work in pairs and groups.

Pre-course message

This is an enjoyable and interactive course, where you can explore new ways of delivering your key messages.  Writing well presents challenges, especially with the pressures of deadlines and the distractions of the working day.  On this course, we exercise a variety of techniques that will take your planning and editing skills to a new level.  We learn by doing; you’re invited to bring along any tasks, projects or ideas to work on during the day.

This course doesn’t cover more formal writing, such as reports, proposals or grant applications.  DSC runs a course on report writing that complements this course.
