  • May 2010: Slashing Charity Commission budget won’t help create the Big Society, say voluntary sector experts

Andrew Phillips, the Liberal Democrat peer and leading authority on charity law, has criticised cuts to the Charity Commission’s budget. Speaking at the 19th annual Charity Law conference, jointly organised by Bates Wells & Braithwaite solicitors (BWB) and the Directory of Social Change (DSC), Lord Phillips said: "it is scandalous that the Charity Commission has had such huge cuts in its staffing, especially considering the amount of extra work created by the 2006 Charities Act."

  • May 2010: Former CAF research luminary to lead transformation of GuideStar

Dr Catherine Walker has been revealed as the new Head of Research for GuideStar UK. Graham Leigh, Head of GuideStar Data Services, said: ‘Catherine is a leading expert in the world of voluntary sector research, with a distinguished background in both academic and applied research.’

  • May 2010: Charities could be left hanging by hung parliament

The Directory of Social Change (DSC) has offered its views about what the hung parliament means for the voluntary sector. Debra Allcock Tyler, DSC’s Chief Executive, said: “A lack of clear leadership could be a recipe for gridlock and delay. It will make it difficult to re-evaluate or scrap policies which are failing. Money will continue to go for things which are not needed, and not be redirected to things which really are needed, because of a lack of consensus.”

  • May 2010: Charities wasting time and money with poorly targeted funding bids

Research by the Directory of Social Change (DSC) indicates that over one-third of applications to UK charitable grantmakers in the last year were ineligible.

  • April 2010: Top 400 UK trusts still give around £2.53 billion to charities every year

Top trusts and foundations are giving more money despite a drop in income, according to research from the latest edition of ‘The Guide to the Major Trusts’, an essential resource for charity fundraisers published by the Directory of Social Change (DSC).

  • March 2010: Trusts and foundations need to give more to the environment

“In spite of the largest UK trusts and foundations increasing their giving to environmental charities they still give overall less than 3% of their grants to environmental issues[1]” says Denise Lillya, author of the Directory of Social Change’s (DSC) new edition of the Environment Funding Guide.

  • March 2010: Third Sector Ministers go head to head in DSC e-news

Angela Smith, Nick Hurd, and Jenny Willott have shared contrasting views about the role of charities in campaigning for change, in response to questions posed by the Directory of Social Change (DSC). Among a series of five questions on key policy issues, DSC asked the Minister and Shadow Ministers for the three main political parties ‘how would life be different for campaigning charities?’ if their party won the election.

  • March 2010: New Guide Navigates the Government Funding Labyrinth

The newly published Government Funding Guide published by the Directory of Social Change tracks 150 local authorities and £2.2 billion of funding from over 200 central government departments.

  • March 2010: GuideStar shines light on funders

Just two weeks after the Directory of Social Change took ownership of GuideStar in March 2010, a new service has been launched. The Funder’s Snapshot from GuideStar Data Services helps funders get a quick and simple update in their field of giving so they can be smarter and more proactive in directing their funds.

  • March 2010: Information revolution for Third Sector as two major players join forces

The Directory of Social Change (DSC) and GuideStar International (GSI) have announced that ownership of www.guidestar.org.uk, the free public website, and GuideStar Data Services, a community interest company providing bespoke information, has been transferred from GSI to DSC. This combines the most detailed repository of information about charities and the voluntary sector with the largest publisher of information for those who work in it.
