Dr Catherine Walker has been revealed as the new Head of Research for GuideStar UK.
Graham Leigh, Head of GuideStar Data Services, said: ‘Catherine is a leading expert in the world of voluntary sector research, with a distinguished background in both academic and applied research.’
‘With her on board we can demonstrate to clients and to charities that we can provide high quality, meaningful data on the third sector. We’re absolutely thrilled that she is joining the team.’
Prior to this appointment, Catherine was best known for her previous role as Head of Research for the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). She holds a PhD in Economic Psychology from the University of Exeter, and is the author of a number of authoritative publications on charitable giving and civil society, including 'A Lot of Give' and 'Charity Trends'.
On accepting the position, Catherine said: ‘This is an incredible opportunity to really revolutionise the research that GuideStar does and the data it provides. The Directory of Social Change already has a fantastic reputation for providing information, and the synergy between DSC and GuideStar offers huge potential. I’m really excited about the future.’
The new relationship between DSC and GuideStar seeks to achieve a step change in the quality and accessibility of information available about charities, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and other not-for-profit groups. Dr Walker’s knowledge and expertise will be central to making this a reality.

Notes to editors:
- Founded in 1974, the Directory of Social Change (DSC) is a national charity which supports an independent voluntary sector through campaigning, training and publications. DSC is the largest supplier of information and training to the voluntary sector, and its work helps tens of thousands of organisations every year achieve their aims.
- The free to access GuideStar UK website www.guidestar.org.uk is the most comprehensive online national database of UK charities, voluntary organisations, social enterprises and other organisations.
- GuideStar Data Services operates The GuideStar Third Sector Database, which comprises more than 400 searchable fields of data on 350,000 organisations including charities, social enterprises and not-for-profit organisations. This is the only database for the sector that is compiled by analysing both the accounts and narrative contained in every annual report. It is a unique, comprehensive and searchable database which can be accessed by those wishing to support or collaborate with the sector.
- On 3 March 2010 ownership of both www.guidestar.org.uk, the free public website, and GuideStar Data Services, a community interest company, was transferred from GuideStar International to DSC.
