A social change award from a national charity enhanced a city council’s bid for funding and underlined its commitment to the community.
The Neighbourhood Renewal Team, at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, received an award from The Directory of Social Change (DSC) last year for working with the community to achieve social change.
Councillor Brian Ward, Stoke-on-Trent City Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: "We were nominated by residents for the award for the innovative way we engaged older people in helping them move from old properties into new ones. We involved residents every step of the way, including incorporating their ideas into the design of the accommodation.
"We were thrilled to have won the award because it showed how residents valued the council's support and input. Winning the award has been a valuable way to demonstrate the council's commitment to engage the community and we have been able to highlight this success when bidding for government funding."
The Directory of Social Change (DSC) is encouraging public bodies, such as parish councils, local authorities, municipal leisure centres or central government departments, to enter the 2009 Social Change Awards.
DSC Chief Executive Debra Allcock Tyler said, “This award identifies the public body that has worked most effectively with the community to achieve shared social change objectives. It recognises the challenges the organisation has overcome using its resources, influence and intelligence to improve the quality of people's lives and help people work together for the benefit of the community.”
To enter the awards, visit www.socialchangeawards.org.uk and complete a brief application form by 25 September.
To nominate a public body for an award, complete an online form by 18 September and DSC will invite the nominated organisation to enter.
