Your Chance to Change the World – The No-Fibbing Guide to Social Entrepreneurship by Craig Dearden-Phillips.
Craig Dearden-Phillips is the founder of disability charity Speaking Up and veteran of several social business start-ups. His life as a social entrepreneur started at the age of 24 when he set up Speaking Up in a tiny community centre in Cambridge.
He eventually built a multi-award-winning organisation employing 100 people and working with 4000 people.
His journey from start-up has seen as many low points as triumphs and as many cock-ups as brilliant strategic masterstrokes. These are shared in abundance in this lively new book!
The book gives a no-nonsense account of how to set up a new social business from scratch. In short, it is a business book for the world’s growing army of social entrepreneurs, and like all good business books it covers the basics of People, Finance and Business Planning.
However, it also has sections specially aimed at social entrepreneurs such as `Finding Funding’, `Governance’ and `Looking After Number One’ (something social entrepreneurs are often very bad at).
What makes this book different from most is its humanity. It doesn’t pretend that the author or the reader is perfect. As a result it offers real guidance to real people doing real things. In doing so it is both inspirational and useful – for it speaks to people’s real situations.
When he set out to write the book, Craig’s mission was simple: to write the book he would have wanted to read when he set out. The book that might have enabled him to change the world that bit faster.
Here is what a few people have had to say about the book:
"It’s a great source of advice for anyone starting out, but also a useful reminder to veteran social entrepreneurs that you are not alone.’ Matt Stevenson-Dodd, Unique Social Enterprise."
"The most practical, usable guide for social entrepreneurs I have read. Perfect for budding changemakers, because it’s written by one.’ Nick Temple, School for Social Entrepreneurs."
"Insightful. Honest. Well written. Timely. Want to be a social entrepreneur? Read this book.’ Liam Black, ex-CEO of Fifteen."
