DSC Associate Trainer Q&A - Amara Martins
Meet Amara Martins, one of DSC’s expert trainers, who specialises in HR.
What’s one practical tip you wish every charity knew about your subject?
That HR and compliance shouldn’t just be a “tick-box” exercise. Well-written policies and clear safeguarding frameworks don’t restrict your team—they actually protect your people, safeguard your mission, and give everyone the confidence to do their best work safely.
What do you enjoy most about training people in the charity sector?
The incredible passion and dedication in the room. People in the charity sector truly care about the impact they are making. When you give them the right HR and compliance tools, they immediately look for ways to use them to better support their colleagues and their communities.
What can someone expect when they attend one of your sessions?
Highly practical, scenario-based learning without the dry legal jargon! I focus heavily on real-world situations so that participants leave with concrete tools, clear boundaries, and the confidence to handle tricky HR or safeguarding situations the minute they get back to their desks.
What is your favourite course to deliver?
I absolutely love delivering content centered around HR for Non-HR Managers (online on Thursday 3 December). Watching that “lightbulb” moment when a manager realises they actually can handle difficult conversations or staff compliance effectively is incredibly rewarding.
What is your top tip for continued learning and development?
Treat your everyday challenges as your best training ground. When you face a difficult HR or management situation, take 10 minutes afterward to reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what you would do differently next time. Consistent, incremental reflection builds incredible expertise.
