Radical leadership in a changing world
Gabby explores how charity leaders can embrace radical leadership to navigate uncertainty with clarity, confidence and compassion, ahead of DSC’s upcoming conference Radical Leadership in a Changing World.
As we reach the end of another challenging year for charities, one question is on the minds of many: how can leaders move beyond survival to think big and act boldly?
With funding pressures, rising costs, and a constantly shifting political and social landscape, leading a charity can feel more demanding than ever. Yet, within these challenges lie opportunities for creativity, collaboration and courage.
On Thursday 27 November, DSC’s online conference Radical Leadership in a Changing World will bring together charity leaders, strategists and communications professionals to explore what it really means to lead with clarity, confidence and compassion in uncertain times.
Through thought-provoking discussions and inspiring talks, the day will offer space to reflect, recharge and rediscover what purposeful leadership looks like today.
The role of communication in leading change
The day will open with a keynote on the essential role of communication in radical leadership.
Adeela Warley, CEO of CharityComms, will encourage leaders to see communications not as an afterthought, but as a vital part of strategy. We asked Adeela how strategic communications can serve as a tool for radical leadership. Here’s what she said:
“There is a real risk that our sector is losing its relevance and impact as the world changes faster than we do. Radical leaders recognise comms professionals for what they really are: expert and strategic advisors who bring strategy to life in a meaningful, powerful way. They welcome their comms team into every strategic conversation from the beginning and reap the rewards.”
Through this lens, communication becomes more than storytelling. It becomes a way to share purpose, strengthen trust and bring people together around a shared vision.
Leading with clarity and confidence
The conference will explore what it takes to lead with clarity when so much feels uncertain.
Charity consultant and strategist Ruth Davison will share insights on how leaders can stay confident and connected in difficult times. We asked Ruth what it takes to lead with clarity and confidence in uncertain times, here’s what she said:
“Leadership through a crisis takes a team. To keep clarity and confidence, leaders need to ask and trust their teams to step in and step up. This may sound counter-intuitive to leaders who want to protect and shield their teams, but enabling your team to work with you can help you not just succeed but also grow together even in challenging times.”
Ruth’s message is simple but powerful: strong leadership is not about carrying everything alone, but about building trust and creating the space for others to lead too.
Redefining what radical leadership means
Christopher Owen, founder of CoLiberation, will be sitting on a panel with Emma Freivogel, Co-Founder at B-Radical, discussing leading through difference. We asked Christopher what radical leadership looks like to him, here’s what he said:
“Radical leadership means treating diversity, equity and inclusion as systemic issues. It involves thinking beyond internal workplace practices and looking externally at larger social problems. From here, a radical leader considers what they can take responsibility for and what assets they (and their team) can utilise to create meaningful change. Radical leaders are critical of the present while optimistic about the future, dismantling systems of oppression today so that tomorrow we can each experience coliberation.”
Join us for this honest panel discussion as our speakers discuss managing internal tension and conflict on external issues, and creating unity.
Why this conversation matters
Across the day, delegates will hear from people who have led through uncertainty and change. Sessions will blend honest reflection with practical advice, helping leaders to explore how they can build resilience, trust and confidence in themselves and their teams.
Radical Leadership in a Changing World is designed as a space to think differently about leadership. It will offer encouragement and inspiration for those who want to lead with courage and authenticity, while also taking away practical ideas to put into action.
