Day One Plenary – GDPR is coming (12:30-13:30)

Gerald Oppenheim, Head of Policy and Communications, The Fundraising Regulator
Gerald was Director of Policy and Partnerships at the Big Lottery Fund until October 2010 when he became a freelancer working with charities, Trusts and Foundations on a wide range of policy projects. He is a Trustee and Chair of the Camden Society (a charity for people with learning disabilities), a trustee at Citizens Advice Camden and an independent board member of the Asda Foundation.


Carla Whalen, Associate, Russell Cooke Solicitors 

Carla is an associate solicitor in the charity and social business team. She assists charities, social businesses and other third sector organisations with all aspects of employment law, HR and data protection matters. Carla is Scots law qualified and trained at a leading Scottish firm.


Day Two Plenary – Responding to UK Emergencies: Is the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) a model to follow? (12:00-12:45)

In the wake of the Grenfell Tower disaster and recent terror attacks, does the UK need a domestic umbrella organisation to coordinate donations and charities’ response, similar to the work of Disasters Emergency Committee for humanitarian crises overseas?

Chaired by Jay Kennedy (Director of Policy and Research at DSC).

Rob Williamson, Chief Executive, Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland

Rob is Chief Executive of the Community Foundation Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, the largest community foundation in the UK. He joined it in July 2009, having previously been Director of Policy and Communications at Northern Rock Foundation. Rob has been a trustee of several national, regional and local charities. He is currently Vice Chair of UK Community Foundations, sits on the BBC’s Charity Appeals Advisory Committee and the Court of Newcastle University, and is a member of advisory panels for the Institute of Public Policy Research (the Future of Civil Society in the North programme) and Charity Bank.


Mark Astarita OBE, Executive Director of Fundraising, British Red Cross

Mark Astarita  is currently Director of Fundraising at the British Red Cross and former Chair of the Institute of Fundraising. He leaves the Red Cross in November after 14 highly successful years where he has trebled income. During his fundraising career, teams led by Mark have raised over £1.5 billion. Consistently voted the most influential person in UK fundraising by his peers, in 2016 Mark was awarded an OBE for his contribution to the charitable sector. Mark ran the fundraising for 7/7, One Love Manchester and recently Grenfell.  Few know more about emergency fundraising in the UK today.
