Charity Accountants' Conference 2017: What's new?

New streams and advice surgeries

As well as covering all the staples of charity finance, at this year’s Charity Accountants’ Conference we have added two exciting new features: a stream of legal sessions and a series of drop-in surgeries. Get more details on these fantastic new additions:

What is an expert advice surgery?

Delegates can book these sessions and receive updates and expert and confidential advice from representatives from Sayer Vincent on any taxation and accounting issues or obtain legal advice from experts from charity law firm, Veale Wasbrough and Vizards (VWV). The free fifteen minutes drop in sessions are available between 9.00 – 10.00am and 08.30 – 09.30 am on 21st and 22nd September.

In addition to our full conference line up, we wanted to give delegates the opportunity to speak to us or VWV directly for advice on any issues affecting them so they can determine next steps – Jonathan Orchard, Partner, Sayer Vincent

New legal stream

Due to delegate demand, several legal workshops are being held this year, led by VWV Partners Kathy Halliday and Con Alexander.

On the first day, there will be a workshop on Employment Law, as well as a session on Intellectual Property, that will enable delegates to understand how to protect their trademarks, copyright and intellectual property rights. There is also a session on data protection focusing on how organisations can prepare for the new GDPR.

On day two, the sessions will cover the Code of Good Governance, Charity Law and there will be a session on how to review your constitution and governance.

A number of legal changes have recently been introduced or are in the pipeline including gender pay gap reporting, the GDPR regulations, the Modern Slavery Act, as well as other issues such as the Taylor Review into modern working practices. The employment landscape is changing and I will be running informative and practical sessions to help delegates gain a better understanding of how to navigate the regulatory landscape- Kathy Halliday, Employment law Partner

I am looking forward to the drop-in sessions and to running workshops to update delegates on the new fundraising regulation, the recently updated Code of Governance and its implications for trustees and senior management, as well as discussing when organisations should review their constitution to ensure it is fit for purpose, amongst other issues- Con Alexander, Head of Charities and Partner at VWV
